10,000 Nigerians to get free AIDS drugs

Thousands of HIV positive Nigerians will receive drug treatments from the end of April, AFP reported Health Minister Alphonsus Nwosu as saying on Friday. Nigeria recently ordered some US $4 million worth of drugs from India to help fight AIDS and the consignment is expected to arrive shortly, according to Nwosu, who said that drugs such as AZT, which boosts the immune systems of people living with HIV, will be given to some 10,000 Nigerians. Nwosu was speaking to reporters in Abuja ahead of an African Summit on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Other Related Infectious Diseases to be held on 26-27 April in the Nigerian capital.
