UNMEE to investigate misconduct of peacekeepers

The United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) has set up a board of inquiry to investigate alleged misconduct by UN peacekeepers, UNMEE's public information office said in a press statement on Wednesday. The statement described the allegations as "of serious concern to all UNMEE staff and peacekeepers". The allegations relate to "misconduct" by a "small" group of Danish soldiers on leave in the Eritrean coastal town of Massawa, from 16 to 18 February, according to the statement. UNMEE said it welcomed the Danish government's swift action in investigating the conduct of its nationals, but UN rules require that "an independent investigation be conducted", in any instances of alleged misconduct by UN peacekeepers.
